Alex Heard

Class of 2028

Art & Art History

Alex Heard is on a quest to soften the harsh edges of our reality by seeking joy tirelessly from a place that does not exist. This realm of softness comes into existence through wearable objects, performance, and installation. It is populated by plush characters and objects come alive. The stories these characters tell are about failure, anxiety, and shame. They illustrate the foibles of trying to understand people, and the busy work of being human. After a friendly introduction, the creature reveals its role as a mascot for emotional outpouring, and a sincere call for empathy. Humor, irony, and sincerity can coexist. Polyester fabric can become cartoon skin for these soft entities. In exploring these strange moments our reality may become easier to understand and ultimately softer.
