The Department of Art and Art History of the University of Connecticut offers an M.A. in Art History. This degree program highlights the range of theoretical and historical approaches that shape the investigation of the visual arts. The program encourages students to explore the ways in which critical theories and methods organize our understanding of visual traditions, and to examine the interactions between regional, national and international cultural spheres within a global context. In addition to providing a thorough grounding in the range of theoretical issues that inform the discipline of Art History, the program’s structure allows students to work closely with faculty in the arts of Africa and the Pacific Islands, Latin American, Caribbean and Asian American visual cultures, and the artistic traditions of Medieval, Renaissance and Modern/Contemporary Europe and North America.

Faculty affiliations with a wide range of University of Connecticut Institutes offer Master’s degree candidates in Art History unique opportunities for interdisciplinary study. This distinct cross-disciplinary focus on the practices of visual interpretation, set within a critical multicultural perspective, is designed to prepare students to pursue Ph.D. degrees in nationally recognized programs, and to pursue a variety of careers in publishing, administration and the arts.
