Julia Arvay ia interested in examining the traditionally assigned gender roles of fine art and craft as well as the distinction between the two. She is similarly intrigued by how gender relates to the function or perception of an object. Her most recent work is focused on themes of feminizing objects as well as the objectification of the female form. She is interested in using the canvas to symbolize the female body, by adorning it with fabrics, jewels, and other decorations that would be seen as traditionally feminine. She is also interested in the ways decoration, including home furnishings such as furniture and art, assign a class or gender to a space. She is exploring the intersection of these ideas through a body of paintings, furniture, and other non-traditional wall pieces.
